Season 2 premiered on Netflix on March 8, 2018 and The Musings of Dogtor Barker will review each episode. I don't have time to watch the entire series this weekend but I will watch an episode a day and try to write a review daily so that you will experience my feelings about the show as I experience them. I will try to put my spoilers toward the end of each blog article and will try to identify when they will begin so that readers that haven't yet watched the episode can stop reading at that point. That said, I will assume that you have seen the earlier episodes prior to reading this so be warned if you haven't begun watching the series!
AKA Ain't We Got Fun was a topsy turvy adventure of an episode. It started with Jessica chained up in a room where she learns the truth about the murders. It is obvious that the doctor loves Jessica's mom and is somewhat over his head. He doesn't appear to be a master criminal or an evil person, he just seems like a doctor who started trying to help people and through a series of decisions ended up in this spot.
Eventually, after Jessica tries to warn the police, the doctor leaves and Jessica is locked up with her mom. After talking for a while with her, Jessica decides that she doesn't want her mom to go to jail so the two of them escape the room and go to Jessica's office where Jessica decides what to do next. The scene in the locked room between mother and daughter was very good. Both actresses sell it, with Jessica starting off not wanting to acknowledge that this person is her mom and her mom desperately trying to find some way to connect with her daughter for the first time in 17 years.
The action then shifts to Malcolm and Trish the morning after there one-night stand. Malcolm immediately recognized that Trish is on something and gets her to fess up about the combat enhancer she has been inhaling. Malcolm had some really good scenes in this episode and appears to be coming into his own as a character. I hope he survives the season. (I assume he will but ya never know!)
The C plot involved Hogarth and the nurse. To be honest, I'm still not sure why I should care about these two. I assume they will find a way to save Hogarth but even if they don't it really doesn't change anything. If she lives and the ALS is cured, then she is generally back in the same place as she was when the season started. So why spend this much time on her? But maybe I'll be surprised at the end of this.
- Not much of a spoiler but for the plot to move along, Jessica's mom had to start acting crazy once they left the locked room because it forces Jessica to act. I admit, I was on edge wondering if she was going to snap and kill someone in almost every scene.
- As I mentioned above, Malcolm is coming along. His approach to resolving the case with Hogarth's partner was novel and unexpected.
- I was surprised that they had Malcolm use the inhaler at the end of the episode. He didn't seem that injured... it almost seemed like he would have been fine after a night's rest. So after making a big deal about having been an addict, to take something that he knew was a drug seemed out of character.
- Not sure of Trish's actions either. Given her severe withdrawal symptoms, she must know the inhaler isn't harmless. It will be interesting to she if this is followed up on or if it is forgotten and we just have to have Malcolm as an addict for a few episodes.
